Anecdote taken from a Jerome K. Jerome novel (paraphrase).

After handsomely compensating a woman who had a rather insubstantial case against a newspaper, the editor of this paper commented.

If a man came and demanded my watch I should refuse him. If he became angry and threatened to take it by force, I would do my best to resist him. If, however, he said he was going to take action to get it in a court of Law, I would take it off my wrist and give it to him and think I had got off cheaply.

Potted Plant in Court

During Michael Jones court case his barrister brought a small leylandii in a smallish plant pot into court to show the Jury and Judge what the plant was like. (They were not so well known in those days).
Later in the five year case the same smallish pot was brought in with a big leylandii growing in it. The barrister said. "Look my Lord, it has grown since the beginning of this case. He was trying to make the point that the hedge was by now just about grown back to where it was when Michael unwisely cut it and suggesting that there was no case to answer because of this.
